Guilan

Gilan is one of the northern provinces of Iran with the capital city of Rasht. Different opinions have been explained the origin of name of Gilan. Dehkhoda’s dictionary derives the word Gilan from “Gil”, in addition to the suffix “an”, meaning the place of residence of the Gil tribe, and adds that the form of this word in the Pahlavi language was Gelan and among the Greeks it was Gelae.

This province is surrounded on the north by the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan, with which it has an international border through Astara, on the west by Ardabil province, on the south by Zanjan and Qazvin provinces, and on the east by Mazandaran province. Gilan covers an area of ​​14,044 square kilometers and according to the 2016 census, its population is 2,530,696.

Gilan is the tenth most populous province and the second most populous province in north of Iran after Mazandaran province. The population density in this province with 177 people per square kilometer which is the third in Iran. Rasht metropolis with 46% of the total population of the province, is the most populous city in the north of the country and the 11th most populous city in Iran. Other populous city of this province is Anzali port, the most important Iranian port on the Caspian Sea, respectively. Other cities are Lahijan, Langrud, Talesh, Rudsar, Astara port, Soomehsara and so on.

Nature of Gilan

Gilan is covered with forest and has a temperate and humid climate. This province includes the green areas of the northwest of the Alborz mountain range and the western part of the southern shores of the Caspian Sea.

Gilan province was recognized as an independent province in the divisions of Iran in 1344. This region was formerly called Gilan state and later it was called “the first province”.

The climate and nature of this region are very different from other regions of Iran. The large number of rivers flowing from the mountains has caused the region to suffer from an abundance of moisture.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, excavations of Marlik Hill (which is 3,000 years old) uncovered pottery, small sculptures of gold, silver and bronze, and bronze weapons, and a royal tomb from the same period, along with a significant collection of jewelry. And the abundance of gold and silver in these antiquities, indicates the expertise of the builders and the wealth of the people of this land in the past.
