Hormozgan Province

Hormozgan province is one of the southern provinces of Iran, located north of Strait of Hormuz, and it has beautiful coasts and ports.

Hormozgan province with its provincial capital, Bandar Abbas, is in the south of Iran and was named this in 1976. The province is situated entirely in front of the Strait of Hormuz, and it has a vital value for Iran; Thus, the word “Hormozgan” was chosen for this province.

Agriculture, fishing, trade, sea transportation and fishery are the main activities of people in this province. Kish and Qeshm Islands are free-trade zones of the province and are they are very profitable. There are also oil, gas, chromite, and red soil mines etc.

History

Hormozgan dates back to several thousand years ago. The sea of Oman and Persian Gulf, which are located next to Hormozgan Province, are today one of the oldest seas in the world. The first humans who lived around these seas, including the ancient Hormozgan people, were the first people who learned how to do seafaring and sailing.

The Persian Gulf and the islands of Hormozgan Province, especially Qeshm, Kish, Larak, Lengeh and Jask islands, were ruled by Elamites for hundreds of years from the third millennium BC and were used as a communication channel for trading with the West Indies and the Nile Valley. The province was also an important trading center during the Sassanian era. During the excavation of “Soro” docking area, a few silver coins were founded from this era.

Handicrafts and souvenirs

Date, fish & shrimp, embroidery and Khoos Doozi are among the most important souvenirs and handicrafts in this province.

Geography

Geographically, Hormozgan consists of two parts, mountain and coastal plain. The province is considered a mountainous region with more than 70 percent of its area included high and low mountains and hills, as well as high plains and valleys.

The mountains of this region, which are the continuation of the Zagros Mountains, extend northeast to south-eastern to within the Persian Gulf waters and gradually diminish their height. In general, the continuation of these mountain ranges ends into continuous calcareous, gypsum and sandy hills, connecting the lowlands of the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.

Genu Mountain with a height of 2,347 meters, 20 km north of Bandar Abbas city in the Isin Plain, Fāreghān Mountain with 3,268 m high and Shab Mountain with 2,861 m high are the tallest mountains in the province.

Attractions

The Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman, Strait of Hormuz, Galedari historical Bath, Hindu Temple, Kolah Farangi Mansion in Bandar Abbas, and mangrove forest Qeshm and Portuguese Fort in Qeshm are famous attractions of Hormozgan.

Costume

Women’s dresses are sometimes as long as to the ankles and sometimes reach under the knee, and varies in different regions. The fabric and color of clothes is one of the most important subjects of women’s clothing in Hormozgan; it is usually light and thin because of the high temperature. They also use colors such as blue, purple, pink, and green. Kandureh, Gavan, Eshkam, Nashteh, wide sleeves, Cloche, Ajami, Chinese, Arabic loose clothing and Simple Shalal are some types of Hormozgan women’s costumes. Chador, port trousers (Bandari trousers), burqa, pleated dress, and orny (a kind of scarf) are local Hormozgan women’s clothing.
