Saadabad Historical Complex

Saadabad Historical Complex has been one of the bungalow residences of Qajar and Pahlavi kings. This complex is one of the three beautiful historical complexes in Shemiranat area in Tehran that the last kings of Iran have lived.

In past, around the complex was full of gardens, and there was also a tree garden inside the complex. The Exclusive palace is the main palace of the complex, and later Reza Khan has increased the number of palaces and buildings over time. These palaces belonged to Reza Shah’s family, and the last palace built in this complex belonged to Leila Pahlavi, the younger daughter of Mohammad Reza Shah.

The structure of the Sadabad Complex was established during the Qajar reign and after the 1920 coup by Reza Khan, the buildings in the complex were rebuilt by order of him simultaneously with the rise of Pahlavi Dynasty. Some parts of the complex were outside of its current area, but then Reza Shah bought and added them to the Saadabad complex.

The Saadabad complex is located in the northernmost part of Tehran, on Tochal foothill. In the past, the surrounding area of complex has been one of the best summer resorts in Tehran, overlooking the green Darband valley, with a fine weather and tree-lined nature. Over time, the construction of the city has spread, and today the Saadabad complex is located within the city. In the past, the complex was located between the gardens, out of the town.

Saadabad Historical Complex is in north of Tehran and you can reach there through different routes according to your location. You just have to reach Zafaraniyeh Street through the shortest route and then enter Taheri Street. Taheri Street is located on the middle, eastern side of Shahid Fallahi Street (Zafaraniyeh). Saadabad complex has two entrances in Zafaraniyeh and Darband streets.

Saadabad Historical Complex is located on an area of nearly 300 hectares, consisting about 110 hectares of buildings and palaces and about 180 hectares of additional gardens, aqueducts, and greenhouses. There is a mixture of European architecture and original traditional Iranian architecture in the construction of the buildings and palaces of Saadabad complex, and the design of the palaces is done by the most prominent native and foreign engineers.

Mellat Museum’s (white palace) engineers in Saadabad complex were Mr. Khorsandi and Russian engineer, Boris. The stucco arts and interior decorations of the White palace were also performed by Iranian artists, including Gholamreza Pahlavan, Abdul Karim Sheikhan, Hossein Kashi, Master Lorzadeh and Reza Malaeke. The entrance to the White palace features four Roman architectural columns and is covered with marble.

In front of the White palace is the statue of Reza Khan’s boots. At first, the statue was complete and located in a square in Dezful, but after the revolution it was broken by the people.
