Holy Shrine of Shah Cheragh (PBUS) Shiraz

The tomb of Shah Cheragh (PBUS) which registered on the list of National works of Iran in 1942, hold a special place in Iranian hearts; He is the brother of Imam Reza (PBUS) and his tomb is located in the historic city of Shiraz. Moreover, this shrine is very important in terms of Islamic and Iranian art and architecture. The tiling and mirror-work have created a beautiful spiritual atmosphere. The architectural style of the holy shrine is derived from Azeri style, which was common in the time of Ilkhanate. Tiny colored mirrors and a variety of beautiful Persian and Arabic scripts in the surrounding façade of the mirrors and tiles are attractive to every visitor.

The tomb has four mansions on four sides of the shrine, and there is a mosque on the western side. The Silver Shrine is located in mansion, under the dome. The courtyard has two main entrances on south and north sides of the shrine, which has a large fountain basin in the middle, and beautiful trees standing out.

What is the History About Shah-e-Cheragh Shrine?

Shah Cheragh (PBUS) Shrine’s building dates back to Adud al-Dawla’s era in Buyid dynasty, about the years 929-949. During the reign of this king, the burial place of the holiness (PBUS) was only a mound of dirt.

During the time of Salghurids which dates to 1226 to 1261, the minister Amir Moqarab al-din, primoed the shrine and built a tomb and a dome for it. The king also ordered to construct an alcove.

Queen Tashi Khatun, mother of the king Sheikh Abu Ishaq Inju, ordered the construction and decoration of an impressive building in the late Ilkhanid period year 1344, which took five years long. In addition to the construction of a great shrine with a high dome, different sections such as the mosque, school, resting place for travelers, and a bazaar were constructed around it. Queen Tashi Khatun dedicated Meymand estate in Fars and a number of market shops adjacent to the shrine.At the time of Nader Shah in 1781, a large gold chandelier was hung under the dome. Before overtaking the Afghans and capturing Shiraz, Nader Shah had decided to rebuild the shrine after the Afghans were defeated, and spent 1,500 Tomans of that time on it.

Museum of Shah Cheragh Holy Shrine

It opens in sync with Eid-e Mab’as (Muhammad’s first revelation) on 21 November,1965. The initial building of the museum was located at the current women’s entrance of the holy shrine, which after the Islamic Revolution in 1984, several rooms of the northern side of the holy court were converted into halls and some of the museum’s objects were exhibited there.

The current building of the Holy Shrine Museum inaugurated in 1993, on the southern side of the shrine. A decade later, the old library of the shrine, located on the upper floor of the museum, was added to the museum complex, and the overall space increased to 1,000m2.
